Banff Gondola Hours: Opening Times, Last Ride Up and Closures
Pursuit's published hours to the end of 2026, the last ride up and down, the November closure and Sky Bistro's January break, the bus back to town, and how long to allow at the top.
From 13 October to 16 November 2026 the Banff Gondola runs every day from 10 am to 9 pm, with the last ride up at 7:30 pm and the last ride down 10 minutes before closing. That is the timetable on the hours page of Pursuit, the company that runs the gondola, when we checked in October 2026. The gondola then closes for annual maintenance from 17 to 19 November, reopens after 19 November and stays open until 10 pm through 31 December. Hours for 2027 had not been published, and Pursuit says its hours are “subject to change without notice”.
Banff Gondola hours to the end of 2026
| Dates (2026) | Open | Last ride up |
|---|---|---|
| 13 October to 16 November | 10 am to 9 pm, daily | 7:30 pm |
| 17 to 19 November | Closed for annual maintenance | - |
| After the closure to 31 December | 10 am to 10 pm, daily | 8:30 pm |
For the rest of the year Pursuit’s FAQ gives the general rule: the gondola opens between 8 and 10 am depending on the season, closes between 9 and 10 pm, and sends its last ride up an hour and a half before closing. Plan on that last figure. The ticket listing gives the last ride up as 30 minutes before closing, but Pursuit’s own table puts it 90 minutes before, at 7:30 pm on a 9 pm day.
Pursuit’s terms add that operating dates and times may change without notice “pending weather and conditions”, so look at its hours page the day before you go.
Booking a time
The ticket is timed. Pursuit’s terms say every attraction needs a booked time, and they ask you to arrive 20 minutes before yours and to be in the line 10 minutes before. Pursuit Collection’s Banff Gondola admission ticket was from US$54 when we checked in October 2026, rated 4.7 from 4,900 reviews. It covers the round trip, the interpretive centre and theatre, the rooftop deck and the summit trails, and its listing includes Autumn Above to 15 November and Mountaintop Christmas from 21 November to 31 December 2026. It has no free cancellation, and the national park pass is not included.
This site is not affiliated with Pursuit; the tickets on this page are booked through GetYourGuide. The Banff Gondola price guide explains how Pursuit prices its own tickets day by day.
The November closure and the restaurants
The gondola shuts from 17 to 19 November 2026. Pursuit’s hours page gives the reopening day as 20 November in one table and 21 November in another, so check before booking either date. Sky Bistro, the summit’s sit-down restaurant, closes on the same three days and again from 4 to 15 January 2027. Until 16 November it serves from 11 am to 7:30 pm, and after the closure to 31 December from 11 am to 8:30 pm, with the last seating an hour before closing.
The Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen buffet serves brunch from 11 am to 2:30 pm and dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 pm until 16 November; Pursuit had not posted its hours beyond that. The 2026 hours of Peak Patio, the rooftop bar, ended on 30 September.
Getting there and back in time
The free downtown shuttle and the free Roam rides that come with a same-day ticket run from 15 May to 12 October 2026, then stop for the year. Roam’s Route 1 still serves the gondola, at the end of Mountain Avenue, all year. Its fall and winter timetable starts on 13 October 2026; check the last bus down on Roam’s timetable before you plan a late ride. A ride cost CA$2 for an adult in October 2026; Roam says its fare system changes in November.
Driving is harder. Pursuit calls parking at the gondola “very limited”, and Parks Canada charges CA$17.50 a vehicle a day for its lots at the base from 15 May to 12 October 2026, between 9 am and 9 pm.
Questions about timing
Do I need to book the Banff Gondola?
Not by rule, but Pursuit strongly recommends it: its FAQ says time slots fill quickly in peak season and “availability is not guaranteed for walk-ins”. Booking early also costs less, because Pursuit’s prices rise as the date approaches and same-day tickets are the dearest. Book ahead or walk up sets out the choice.
Is Banff Gondola better in morning or afternoon?
Pursuit’s own suggestion is early morning, for quiet trails and softer light, or late afternoon for golden hour, and to stay away from the midday rush. Mornings bring a saving for families: with the Family Experience, one child goes free with each adult paying the regular price during the first two hours of the day. The best time to visit the Banff Gondola goes through the seasons.
What happens if you miss your Banff Gondola time?
Pursuit’s terms say to check in at the attractions desk, which rebooks you on the next available time; at busy periods there may be few. Pursuit’s own tickets can be changed online up to 48 hours before the visit, and inside that window it asks you to phone. The ticket listing tells you to join the boarding queue at the time on your ticket, and it has no free cancellation.
How much time is needed at Banff Gondola?
Pursuit allows 1.5 hours for the ride and the boardwalk, 2 hours with a meal at the Northern Lights buffet and 2.5 hours with Sky Bistro. Day tours that stop at the gondola give it between 80 and 105 minutes. The ride takes about eight minutes each way, and what to expect at the Banff Gondola walks through the rest.
Is Banff Gondola free ride down?
No. If you hike up Sulphur Mountain, Pursuit sells a one-way ride down for half the regular admission, free for children 5 and under, during operating hours. Riding up and walking down takes a full-price ticket. Parks Canada gives the trail as 4.8 km to the top of the gondola, with 655 m of climbing and about four hours for the round trip, and Pursuit warns that in winter it is covered in snow and ice. The gondola or the hike compares the two.
How scary is the Banff Gondola?
Pursuit’s answer is that most people find it smooth. The cabins are enclosed and seat four, and its technical table gives an average incline of 51% with the line never more than 38 m above the ground. Two day tours that include the ride list themselves as unsuitable for people afraid of heights. Cabins are generally filled, so you may share; Pursuit does not guarantee a private one.
How to dress for Banff Gondola?
In layers. Pursuit says the summit is several degrees colder than the base and that the weather can turn from sunshine to freezing rain and snow within an hour. In winter the cabins are not heated, and it asks for a winter jacket, a hat, gloves or mitts and warm socks; staff may refuse boarding to anyone dressed unsafely. The boardwalk has 368 shallow stairs each way, so wear shoes you can climb in.
Which is better, Jasper Skytram or Banff Gondola?
They sit in different parks, and from late October only one of them runs. Pursuit, which operates both, closes the Jasper SkyTram on 25 October 2026 (26 October on its hours page) and lists its 2027 season as 21 May to 11 October. The SkyTram climbs about 948 m to an upper station at 2,263 m in seven minutes, in cars that normally carry 20 to 25 people, and a 1.4 km hike continues to the Whistlers summit. The Banff Gondola climbs 698 m to 2,281 m in four-seat cabins. The SkyTram ticket was from US$57 in October 2026; the Jasper SkyTram page has the rest.
What to avoid in Banff?
At the gondola, the closed days (17 to 19 November 2026) and a drive up Mountain Avenue at a busy hour in the hope of a parking space. Across the park, Parks Canada asks you to stay 100 m from bears, wolves, cougars and coyotes and 30 m from elk, deer, sheep and moose; feeding or disturbing wildlife can bring a fine of up to CA$25,000. Recreational drones are banned in the national parks, and since 8 September 2026 a Superintendent’s order requires a park pass for any travel in Banff National Park except driving straight through on Highways 1 and 93 South.
The Banff Gondola page has the ticket calendar, the day tours that stop there and more answers, and the Banff page covers the town and its buses.
