Banff Gondola or Lake Louise Gondola?

Two lifts 55 km apart that do different jobs. Their 2026 seasons and prices, what is at the top of each, who each one suits, and where Sunshine, Mt Norquay and the Jasper SkyTram fit in.

Updated October 2026

Between mid-October and early June, plan on the Banff Gondola. It runs every day apart from a closure on 17 to 19 November 2026, while the Lake Louise lift sits idle until the ski season and then takes sightseers only “when conditions allow”. The Lake Louise Summer Gondola ran from 5 June to 11 October in 2026, and the resort has not published its 2027 dates. In summer the two do different jobs. The Banff Gondola climbs 698 m above the town to a summit building with restaurants and a ridge boardwalk. The Lake Louise lift belongs to the Lake Louise Ski Resort, which advertises “breathtaking views of Lake Louise and beyond” and sells the ride on the chance of seeing grizzly bears.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The calendar above is for the Banff Gondola only, and the Banff Gondola page covers that ride in full. Pursuit, which runs it, sells tickets on its own website and at the base, and through booking partners including GetYourGuide. This site is not affiliated with Pursuit; the tickets here are booked through GetYourGuide.

The Lake Louise ski season opens on 6 November 2026, and the resort says it sells winter sightseeing rides online and at its Guest Services counter. It gives no 2027 summer dates yet.

Where Lake Louise wins

Wildlife, in summer. The resort calls its gondola “one of the best places in the Canadian Rockies to safely view grizzly bears”, and Banff & Lake Louise Tourism says bears are “sighted almost daily from the resort’s sightseeing lift during the summer months”. Those are the resort’s and the tourism office’s words; Parks Canada makes no such claim, and nobody can promise a bear. The Wildlife Interpretive Centre near the top costs nothing to enter.

A day already spent at Lake Louise. The resort is where the Parks Canada shuttles to the lakes started from in 2026, and the Banff Gondola is 55 km away in Banff (Parks Canada’s figure).

Coming and going as you please. A Lake Louise ticket covers unlimited rides that day, and you don’t book an upload time.

The resort sells its own tickets. Children under 12 or under 106 cm must ride with an adult, pets are not allowed apart from service animals, and the resort warns that “Operations may be suspended due to weather.”

Where the Banff Gondola wins

  • Any visit from mid-October to early June, the months when the Lake Louise lift is closed or working as a ski lift.
  • A base in Banff. The lower terminal is at the end of Mountain Avenue, and Pursuit says Roam’s Route 1 bus serves it all year.
  • Evenings. It stays open until 9 pm to mid-November and until 10 pm from the end of the November closure to 31 December, while the Lake Louise lift’s last summer ride down was at 5:10 pm.
  • A wheelchair or limited mobility. Pursuit says the cabins come off the track to load and an elevator serves all four levels of the summit building; the ridge boardwalk, with 368 shallow stairs each way, is the part that isn’t accessible.
  • A meal or a warm room at the top. Sky Bistro and the Northern Lights buffet are in the summit building; Sky Bistro also closes from 4 to 15 January 2027.

For a visit this autumn or winter, that settles it.

Which gondola ride in Banff is the best?

It depends on the month and what you want at the top, and none of the operators or tourism offices we read ranks them. Four lifts near Banff take sightseers:

LiftSightseeing season (2026)What it is for
Banff GondolaAll year except 17-19 NovemberThe Bow Valley and the surrounding ranges, from a summit building
Lake Louise Summer Gondola5 June to 11 October, plus winter rides when conditions allowWildlife viewing, in the resort’s own pitch
Banff Sunshine Meadows6 July to 20 SeptemberAlpine meadows; one ticket covers the Sunshine gondola and the Standish chairlift
Mt Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift10 June to 11 OctoberAn open chairlift to the Cliffhouse Bistro, CA$47 an adult

Sunshine’s meadows are for walking: Parks Canada lists 10.2 km of trails there, four to five hours’ worth, and from 1 June to 15 October 2026 it banned all off-trail travel in the meadows to protect grizzly bear habitat. Of the two resort fares quoted on this page, Norquay’s is the lower: CA$47 for an adult, against CA$65 plus GST at Lake Louise. In winter Sunshine and Norquay are ski areas: Norquay plans to open on 1 November 2026 (a tentative date) and Sunshine on 6 November.

And the Jasper SkyTram?

Pursuit runs that one too, in Jasper, 288 km from Banff by Travel Alberta’s measure. It climbs further than the Banff Gondola, about 948 m in seven minutes in cars of 20 to 25 people, though its upper station, at 2,263 m, sits slightly lower; from there a 1.4 km trail continues to the Whistlers summit at 2,463 m. Its 2026 season ends in late October, and Pursuit’s published 2027 dates are 21 May to 11 October. Its ticket was from US$57 in October 2026. The Jasper SkyTram page has the rest.

Other questions

Which is nicer, Lake Louise or Banff?

They are different places rather than better and worse ones. Banff is a town of 8,305 people (2021 Census), with the gondola at the end of Mountain Avenue south of downtown. Lake Louise, 55 km to the west, is a small community whose lakeshore Parks Canada keeps open all year. The Banff and Lake Louise pages cover each, and the best time to visit Banff compares them as bases.

How much time is needed at the Banff Gondola?

The ride takes about eight minutes each way, and the day tours that stop at the gondola allow between an hour and 105 minutes in all. What to expect at the Banff Gondola walks through a visit.

Why is the Banff Gondola so expensive?

Pursuit sets “only one price per day”, based on projected visitation, so weekends and same-day tickets cost more. The ticket covers the summit building’s exhibits, theatre and deck as well as the ride; food is extra. The Banff Gondola price guide goes through it.

How scary is the Banff Gondola?

Pursuit says the cabins are “fully enclosed” and move “without any sharp drops or sudden movements”, and the ride lasts about eight minutes. Norquay’s sightseeing lift is a chairlift, and so is the Standish lift on a Sunshine ticket.

Is the gondola in Banff worth it?

For most first visits, yes. Is the Banff Gondola worth it? sets out who gains most and who does better on the trail.

What to avoid in Banff?

From the lifts’ side of things: the midday rush at the Banff Gondola, which Pursuit itself steers visitors away from; 17 to 19 November 2026, when it is closed; counting on the Lake Louise lift between 12 October and the ski season; and arriving without a park pass, which neither gondola ticket includes (CA$12.25 an adult a day in 2026). And don’t plan to drive to Moraine Lake: its road is closed to personal vehicles all year.
