What to Expect at the Banff Gondola, from the Base to the Ridge

The base, the eight-minute ride, what is inside the summit building, the ridge boardwalk and its stairs, where to eat, what to wear, and what changes in winter.

Updated October 2026

A Banff Gondola visit is an eight-minute ride in a four-seat cabin from the end of Mountain Avenue to a summit building 698 m higher, at 2,281 m, and then as long as you like at the top. Inside are an interpretive centre, a theatre, restaurants and a 360-degree rooftop deck; outside, a boardwalk runs along the ridge with 368 shallow stairs each way. Pursuit, which runs the gondola, allows an hour and a half for the ride and the boardwalk, two hours with a buffet meal and two and a half with Sky Bistro. The gondola runs all year apart from 17 to 19 November 2026.

At the base

The lower terminal, at 1,583 m, stands at the end of Mountain Avenue at the foot of Sulphur Mountain, on the same road as the Banff Upper Hot Springs, and has a Starbucks and a gift shop. Roam’s Route 1 runs there from downtown Banff all year, for CA$2 an adult in October 2026. The free shuttle and the free Roam rides that come with a same-day ticket end on 12 October 2026, and Pursuit calls parking at the gondola “very limited”.

Pursuit’s terms ask you to arrive 20 minutes before your ticket time and to be in the line 10 minutes before. Pets do not ride, though service animals are welcome. The ticket listing does not allow strollers, and Pursuit does not recommend them. Bikes, skis and sleds stay behind, and recreational drones are banned in the national parks. There is accessible parking within 30 m of the entrance, with a ramp into the building.

How long is the gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain?

About eight minutes. By Pursuit’s technical table the cable runs 1,560 m over three towers at an average incline of 51%, and the line is never more than 38 m above the ground. The 40 cabins seat four each and are generally filled, so you may share one. They come off the track to load and unload, which gives anyone in a wheelchair time to board; most wheelchairs and mobility devices up to 31 inches wide and 41 inches long fit, within a total weight limit of 320 kg. The cabins are not heated in winter. The line was first built in 1958-59 and rebuilt in 1997-98.

Inside the summit building

Four levels, all reached by elevator. The interpretive centre is self-guided, on the park’s wildlife, weather, geology and cultural stories, and a film plays in the theatre; both come with admission. Children up to 16 can pick up a Rockies Rangers field guide. The rooftop deck looks all the way round: Pursuit counts six mountain ranges, and its FAQ names the big lake you see as Lake Minnewanka, with Mount Aylmer, 3,162 m, rising near it. The town sits in the Bow Valley; the gondola itself, Pursuit notes, is in the Spray Valley.

The boardwalk along the ridge

From the summit building a boardwalk follows the ridge toward Sanson’s Peak, about 10 m higher than the upper terminal, and the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station, a national historic site since 1982 for its part in the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58. It now ends at a viewpoint between the station and the Weather Observatory, built in 1903, used until 1933 and restored by Parks Canada in 2025; Pursuit says the change protects the building. The walk has 368 shallow stairs each way and is not wheelchair accessible. Its length depends on who you ask: Pursuit calls it a 2 km stroll, while Parks Canada describes a 500 m boardwalk.

Eating at the top

Food is never part of the ticket. Castle Mountain Coffee Co., on the first level, sells coffee and grab-and-go food. The Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen is a buffet, serving brunch from 11 am to 2:30 pm and dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 pm until 16 November 2026; its autumn Alpine Harvest Dinner Buffet costs CA$60 an adult and CA$30 a child from 2 October to 17 December. Sky Bistro, on level 3, is the sit-down restaurant. Pursuit recommends a reservation, taken through OpenTable up to 90 days ahead, and seats walk-ins as space allows; its four-course Autumn Feast costs CA$70 a person until 15 November. Sky Bistro closes from 17 to 19 November and from 4 to 15 January 2027, and the 2026 hours of Peak Patio, the summer rooftop bar, ended on 30 September.

Booking a time

The admission ticket covers everything above except the food: the round trip, the interpretive centre and theatre, the rooftop deck and the summit trails. It was from US$54 when we checked in October 2026, rated 4.7 from 4,900 reviews, with no free cancellation, and the national park pass, CA$12.25 an adult a day in 2026, is extra.

Is it colder at the top of Banff Gondola?

Yes. Pursuit says the summit is several degrees colder than the base and that the weather can turn from warm sunshine to freezing rain and snow within an hour, so dress in quick-drying layers in any season. For scale, Environment Canada’s normals give the town of Banff an average high of 9.1 °C in October and -4.6 °C in December. In winter Pursuit asks for a winter jacket, a hat, gloves or mitts and warm socks, and staff may turn away anyone dressed unsafely.

Is Banff Gondola open in winter?

Yes, every day except 17 to 19 November 2026. From 13 October to 16 November it opens from 10 am to 9 pm, and after the closure until 31 December from 10 am to 10 pm, with the last ride up at 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm. The ticket’s listing includes Autumn Above to 15 November and Mountaintop Christmas from 21 November to 31 December. Pursuit had not published 2027 hours in October 2026; Banff Gondola hours has the detail.

Other questions first-timers ask

Which is better, the Banff Gondola or the Lake Louise Gondola?

In winter, plan on the Banff Gondola: the Lake Louise Summer Gondola runs from 5 June to 11 October in 2026, by its ticket page, and in the ski season the resort sells sightseeing rides only “when conditions allow”. They are different rides, and Banff Gondola vs Lake Louise Gondola compares them.

How much does a Banff Gondola ticket cost?

From US$54 as of October 2026; Pursuit’s own price changes by the day. The Banff Gondola price guide adds the park pass, parking and the discounts.

Why is the Banff Gondola so expensive?

Pursuit sets one price per day according to expected visitation, so weekends, same-day tickets and busy seasons cost more, and the ticket covers the summit building as well as the ride.

Is the gondola ride worth it in Banff?

If you want the summit without Parks Canada’s 4.8 km trail and its 655 m of climbing, yes, it is the way up; hikers can ride down for half the regular admission. Is the Banff Gondola worth it? and the gondola or the hike go further.

How many days in Banff is enough?

Banff & Lake Louise Tourism says three days covers the highlights and five is ideal for a first visit; the gondola takes a morning or an afternoon of them. The Banff itinerary builds the days.

What is the cheapest month to go to Banff?

No source we read prices Banff month by month. Pursuit says mid-week days and the early and late season are cheaper for the gondola, and November is the quietest month in Parks Canada’s visit counts. The best time to visit the Banff Gondola goes season by season.

The Banff Gondola page has the ticket calendar and the day tours that include the ride, and the Banff page covers the town around it.
